6 Types of Mattress – Choosing the Right Mattress for You
Have you ever noticed how everything in life seems to be better after a good night’s sleep? When you’re sleeping well, you’ll find that you wake up refreshed, energized, and full of motivation, ready to tackle whatever the day decides to throw at you. On the other end of the spectrum, if you aren’t sleeping well, life, well, it kinda’ sucks. In terms of getting a good night’s sleep, having a good mattress can literally make all the difference. The hard part is knowing what to look for. Walk into any mattress showroom and you’ll be bombarded with mattress after mattress, coming in all shapes, sizes, designs, and materials, and it’s easy to find oneself becoming overwhelmed. The mattress-making industry is currently one of the most competitive and lucrative on the face of the earth because people realize just how important these mattresses are. If you’re looking to purchase a new mattress, here’s a look at the different types of popular mattress currently available.
Pocket sprung mattresses – The first mattress type that we’ll be looking at today is the pocket sprung mattress. With these specific types of mattress, you’ll find that metal springs are sewn into individual pockets of fabric within the mattress. Pocket sprung mattresses have been tried and tested for years, decades even, and if you find a good quality one, it will serve you well. Now, they don’t mold themselves to your body as memory foam mattresses do, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t offer support, because they do. A good quality pocket sprung mattress will help to relieve some pressure from your joints. What’s more, they’re cooler than memory foam mattresses, making them ideal for people that get too hot in bed at night.
Innerspring mattresses – Next up, we have innerspring coil mattresses. Very similar to pocket sprung mattresses, these have been popular for over three decades now. These mattresses contain steel coil springs in their cores, which compress when weight is placed upon them. The exact amount of springs found in innerspring mattresses varies from product to product. The more coils, generally speaking, the more comfortable the mattress and the more supportive it is. Now, we won’t lie, the main reason why these mattresses became so popular in the 90s was because of the fact that they were so affordable.
Memory foam mattresses – Over the years, people have discovered the wonders of memory foam when it comes to mattresses. Memory foam is a material that was originally invented by NASA to help keep their pilots and astronauts safe in the event of a crash. Nowadays, though, memory foam is commonly found in mattresses. This is because the material is soft and supportive. Memory foam has the ability to mould itself and shape itself around a person’s torso as they lay on it. This is why it’s known as memory foam because it ‘remembers’ the natural shape of your body when you sleep, so it offers superior support and comfort. It bounces back very slowly, creating a soft and luxurious feel. Memory foam mattresses help to keep your spine aligned, they ease pressure on the joints, they provide pain relief, they’re soft and promote comfort, and they’re great for keeping warm in the winter. Memory foam mattresses also offer motion isolation properties, which means that, if you move in bed, the rest of the mattress will stay firmly in place, without disrupting anybody else that happens to be laid in bed.You can check out our other article (What is a Memory Foam Mattress?).
Latex foam – Latex is a material that is now becoming more widely used in the world of mattress production. Latex is commonly derived from the sap of the rubber tree. When this milky white liquid is exposed to oxygen in the air, it becomes a bouncy, rubbery solid. From here, this material can then be used to create a foam, similar in texture to memory foam. Synthetic latex is also an option. This is not made from natural latex, but rather, from petrochemicals which are very similar in structure and feel to real natural latex. Finally, there are also latex blends, which are made from a blend of synthetic latex and natural latex. Latex foam mattresses are popular amongst solo sleepers as they offer a lot of durability and support, without the motion isolation properties of memory foam.
Hybrid mattresses – So far, the mattresses we’ve listed above have either been made from foam, or springs. Whilst they both offer their own unique advantages, they also of course, have their own drawbacks. But what if you could combine the two so as to get the best of both worlds? Well, in the form of a hybrid mattress, you can. A hybrid mattress is basically a combination of a memory foam mattress and a coiled spring mattress. Typically, you’ll find that they offer at least 4 layers. First up you’ll find a comfort layer, a cooling layer of gel-infused cooling memory foam, a layer of individual coils, and a supportive memory foam layer at the base. Hybrids are ideal because they offer the comfort of a memory foam mattress, with superior support and pressure relief from the pocket springs. Because hybrids contain a cooling gel layer, and offer superior heat displacement, they help to keep you cool in bed, rather than too hot, which can happen with memory foam.
Mattress toppers – Finally, if you’re not sure if a memory foam mattress is right for you, or if you simply want to test the waters and see how they feel, how about opting for a memory foam mattress topper? Basically, these toppers add an additional layer of padding, comfort, and support to your mattress, without you having to replace your entire mattress. They come in a selection of sizes and simply sit snugly on top of your existing mattress, allowing you to fit your sheets as usual, and climb into bed. Mattress toppers are also a little more affordable than new mattresses, so they’re ideal if you’re on a budget.
